About the park
Volcanoes National Park lies in northwest Rwanda, protecting the country’s share of the Virunga Massif, a chain of eight ancient volcanoes shared with Uganda and the DR Congo. Its slopes rise through bamboo and montane forest to high moorland, creating a lush, misty landscape of great beauty. This is where the American primatologist Dian Fossey carried out her pioneering gorilla research, and the park remains central to gorilla conservation today.
Mountain gorilla trekking
The park is the Rwandan home of the endangered mountain gorilla.
The park’s headline experience is trekking to see its habituated mountain gorilla families. Guided by rangers and trackers, you hike through the forest for a strictly limited, unforgettable hour with a family. It is one of the world’s great wildlife encounters, and the park’s proximity to Kigali makes it especially accessible. Golden monkey trekking
Beyond gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is one of the few places to see the rare and playful golden monkey. These striking primates live in the bamboo forests on the volcanoes’ lower slopes, and trekking to see them is a shorter, easier, and more affordable outing than the gorillas, making a perfect complement. Volcano hikes and the Dian Fossey trail
Hiking Bisoke volcano to its crater lake is a popular park activity.
The park is a paradise for hikers. You can climb Mount Bisoke to its beautiful crater lake in a day, or take on the tougher multi-day ascent of Karisimbi, the highest peak in the range. A moving half-day hike leads to the tomb of Dian Fossey and the remains of her Karisoke research camp, a pilgrimage for anyone who knows her story. These hikes offer stunning views and a real sense of the Virungas’ wild grandeur.
Best time to visit
The park can be visited year-round, but the drier months, from June to September and December to February, offer the firmest trails and most comfortable trekking. The wetter seasons are lush and green with fewer visitors, though paths can be muddy. Being high-altitude forest, some rain is possible at any time, so come prepared whatever the season.
