About Mahale Mountains National Park
Established in 1985, Mahale covers 1,613 square kilometres along the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. The park’s forested mountains rise steeply from the lakeshore, creating a dramatic backdrop found nowhere else in the country. With no roads, Mahale is explored entirely on foot and by boat, which gives it a wonderfully wild, untouched atmosphere.
Chimpanzee trekking
Mahale is one of the best places on earth to trek habituated wild chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees are the reason most people come to Mahale, and it is one of the finest places in the world to see them. The park is home to a large population of wild chimpanzees, and one group — the famous M-group — has been studied and habituated to human presence for decades. This makes it possible to trek through the forest and watch these remarkable primates up close.
Because chimpanzees share around 98% of our DNA, an encounter with them is deeply moving. Trekking involves a guided hike through steep forest, so a reasonable level of fitness helps, but the reward is unforgettable.
Beyond the chimps
After trekking, you can snorkel Lake Tanganyika’s clear, fish-filled waters.
Mahale offers far more than chimpanzees. The park is home to several other primate species, plus warthogs, mongooses, and elusive leopards, along with around 355 bird species. The real bonus, though, is Lake Tanganyika itself — one of the oldest and deepest lakes on earth, home to hundreds of colourful endemic fish. After a morning trek, you can snorkel or swim in its clear waters, or simply relax on a quiet beach.
Other activities include kayaking, boat trips, sport fishing, and hiking to Mount Nkungwe, the park’s highest peak.
Best time to visit and how to get there
The dry season, from June to October, is the best time to visit. The forest is easier to walk, and chimpanzees tend to range on the lower slopes, making them easier to reach. The wet season brings lush scenery and excellent birdwatching. Mahale is remote and reached only by air: a light-aircraft flight to the park’s airstrip, followed by a scenic boat transfer along the lakeshore. This journey is part of the adventure and adds to the park’s exclusive feel.
