If you are planning your first Tanzania safari, two names come up again and again: the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Many travellers assume they have to choose between them. The good news is that they sit close together on the classic northern circuit, so most safaris include both. But if your time is limited, here is how they compare.
The Serengeti: endless plains and the migration
The Serengeti is vast, covering roughly 14,750 square kilometres of open savannah. It is home to the Great Migration and huge populations of predators. The Serengeti is best for travellers who want space, big skies, multi-day game drives and the chance to witness the migration. You will spend more time driving between sightings, but the sense of wilderness is unmatched.
The Ngorongoro Crater: wildlife density in a natural amphitheatre
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and its walls create a natural enclosure teeming with wildlife. In a single day you have an excellent chance of seeing the Big Five: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and the rare black rhino. It is compact, dramatic, and perfect if you are short on time.
Head to head
- For the migration: Serengeti wins, easily.
- For seeing the Big Five in one day: Ngorongoro wins.
- For a sense of endless wilderness: Serengeti.
- For a short trip: Ngorongoro delivers more in less time.
- For rhino sightings: Ngorongoro is your best chance.
The verdict: do both if you can
Because they are only a few hours apart, the ideal itinerary combines them. A common approach is to spend a day exploring the Ngorongoro Crater and then continue into the Serengeti for two or more nights. If you only have time for one, choose the Ngorongoro for guaranteed density, or the Serengeti if the migration is your dream.
